We just picked up a report of a potential bug in Groove 2007 Forms. This issue only affects users who have their Windows installation set to any other locale than US. When your system locale is set to a non-US setting, and you load a custom Groove form that uses the app.NavigateToForm() call, you may receive a type mismatch error.

Action
Your system locale is set to a non-US setting, and you enter a Groove tool based on a custom form. This code for this form includes the following call:

app.NavigateToForm(formID, targetRecordID)

Result
You may receive the following error:

AutoCreate_OnAfterInitialize: Type mismatch

Check to ensure tool permissions are set to allow participants and guests can create documents

Resolution

To work around this problem, have the form developer change the code to multiply the formID and targetRecordID by 1 in the line that triggers the error. The call will then look like this:

app.NavigateToForm(formID * 1, targetRecordID * 1)

Practice tests available for Microsoft's Groove exam

There are two practice tests available for the Configuring Groove exam 70-555 from two providers, one from Selftest engine and another (allegedly since it isn't yet listed in their catalog yet) from MeasureUp.

But it's not a rich collaborative environment. If you have a project where you wanted to capture all of a team's interactions in one spot, Live Mesh as it stands wouldn't be sufficient. It doesn't have Groove's robust, always on security capabilities. Nor does it compartmentalize a group's interactions the way Groove does, making it much easier to track progress - or at least I didn't see it that way. Because if it did, it would provide a great tool for small business project collaboration.

Here's a good overview http://on10.net/

"Many mergers and acquisitions fail to achieve their financial objectives because teams face challenges when trying to work together effectively before their infrastructure has merged. This paper looks at how Microsoft Office Groove 2007 can help to solve some of the problems associated with post-merger integration."

Groove SP1 is available

SP1 build number 12.0.6215.

The fixes specific to Groove, in this Office 2007 service pack update, are:

1) "Microsoft Office Groove Data Bridge Server 2007 stops responding if all the following conditions are true:
• The server that is running Groove Data Bridge Server 2007 is also running the Subscription Manager service.
• A Web service creates a new record. The record creates an event that has an attribute of type string.
• The Subscription Manager service on the server tries to enqueue an event that has the XML representation of the new record attached to it.

2) You restart Internet Information Services (IIS) on a computer that is running Microsoft Office Groove Manager Server 2007. When you do this, the following error message is logged in the Application log:
The description for Event ID ( 200 ) in Source ( GrooveManagementServer ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: <IID></IID><Details Process="w3wp.exe" HRESULT="0x80004005" EventMessage="Groove Management Server beta period expired."
However, Groove Manager Server continues to operate.
Note This issue may occur on a computer on which the beta software was never installed."

3) When Subscription Manager queues an event that has too much binary data, Storage Manager ends the Groove Data Bridge (GDB) process.

4) If the Windows Firewall service is enabled but the firewall is off, the Groove Relay Server 2007 startup process stops responding. This issue does not occur if the firewall is disabled or if the firewall is fully enabled.

Groove Traction - where is Groove taking hold?

At TechEd in Barcelona this week I have been gathering Groove anecdotes and I now have enough data to assemble a reasonable picture of how Groove is being put to use in Europe

In the public sector Groove is being used to provide a common platform between agencies where none existed before, or where a top down platform provided inadequate functionality, responsiveness or user control. Two examples stand out. In several countries, emergency response agencies are using Groove to coordinate actions in exercises and in real situations. Those agencies range from the military to police, fire and local government authorities. This is very similar to the type of work being conducted in Florida. The second is in health care, particularly the UK's NHS where a workspace becomes the focus for coordinating care to a single patient, viewed and edited by diverse care workers. By devolving membership down to those that understand the trust relationships best as well as providing the ability to access records where connectivity may be not be available, Groove is providing bottom up connectivity where top down systems have proved to be too costly, cumbersome and vulnerable.

In the financial sector, mergers and acquisitions teams are using Groove to quickly set up secure communications channels. Early in the process, companies don't want to invest a lot of effort in a venture that may not materialize. Groove provides a pragmatic, inexpensive and secure platform. Also auditors are using Groove to work securely with their colleagues on client sites.

Projects: Software projects. Marketing projects. Construction projects. Research projects. Film projects. Anywhere you see highly paid people (i.e. those that carry laptops), from multiple organizations, who need to share the same documents, you are starting to see Groove being used. The alternative is an extranet or neutral hosted service. It takes time to add new members to a secure extranet so they turn to Groove where workspaces and members can be set up in seconds. Where you see SharePoint, you see Groove taking hold. Plus third party web sites generally don't accommodate offline working on identical documents very elegantly.

Physical networks. Utilities are finding that Groove provides an excellent field response platform for coordinating actions when a node fails. One consequence of failure might be loss of communication with HQ or responders, so Groove's offline repository becomes invaluable.

Lastly in universities that have banned peer to peer music sharing sites, students have discovered that Groove encrypts traffic. Er - say no more. At least some academics and students have also found Groove is also a great platform for team projects.

It's still very early days for Groove in Europe. There are lots of proofs of concept underway. Those organizations that have purchased licenses are only in initial deployments. It is taking off inside Microsoft and they have set some ambitious goals for the product. We are at an inflection point.
